Springfield College swimming teams swept by Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Michael Normoyle of Springfield, Mass., swam well for the Pride, winning the 100 breaststroke (59.51) and placing second in the 50 breaststroke (27.65) and third in the 100 IM (56.29), but the Springfield College men’s swimming and diving team fell to Middlebury 181.5-116.5 on Jan. 11.

Holyoke, Mass., natives Phillip Murphy and Pat Geraghty also competed. Geraghty finished second in the 50-yard butterfly (24.94) and Murphy was third in the 500 free (5:01.61).

Kelsey Poole of Westfield, Mass., was part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that won with a time of 3:40.19 as the women’s team narrowly fell 150-148.

Pickett records double-double

WESTON – Elms College women’s basketball junior forward JC Pickett of Chicopee continued her dominance on the boards, as she netted 11 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to give the Blazers three starters in double figures in an 80-39 victory over Lesley University on Jan. 11.

She also pulled down 13 rebounds – a game-high – but the Blazers were edged by Regis College 66-60 on Jan. 9.

Pickett added 10 points for a double-double, including two free throws that put the team up 58-57 with 2:19 remaining, but Regis outscored Elms down the stretch 9-2.

Miemiec wins 50 free for WNE

DANBURY, Conn. – Chelsea Miemiec of Westfield, Mass., won the 50-yard freestyle in 29.50, but the Western New England University women’s swim team was dealt a 135-119 loss at Western Connecticut State University on Jan. 11.

Liebel earns decision as Yellow Jackets sting Bears

SPRINGFIELD – Connor Liebel of Feeding Hills earned a decision at the 125-pound weight class as the American International College wrestling team beat the Bridgewater State Bears 25-19 on Jan. 11.

Springfield College downs nationally ranked Babson

BABSON PARK – Alex Garstka of Westfield chipped in with 12 points and six helpers to help the Springfield College men’s basketball team to a 89-81 win over 25th-ranked Babson College on Jan. 11.

Sanchez helps WSU to big second half, comeback victory

WESTFIELD – Springfield’s Jesus Sanchez tied for game-high honors with 16 points to rally Westfield State University to a resounding 68-49 comeback victory over Framingham State in the Owls’ Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men’s basketball opener on Jan. 9.

The Owls entered the second half trailing by nine points, but outscored the visitors 47-20 in the second half.

Center Carl Stewart of Springfield scored seven points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds while Chicopee’s Robby Jones added 12 points.

Sanchez also recorded 12 points and six rebounds for the Owls in a 79-71 loss to Bridgewater State on Jan. 11. Jones had a solid game with nine points, seven rebounds and three steals.

WSU also dropped an 80-68 decision to Nichols College on Jan. 13. Stewart just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Starke wins three events as Elms College rolls

CHICOPEE – Elms College senior Aaron Starke of Chicopee won three individual events and the Blazers men’s swimming and diving team had five different swimmers secure first place finishes to help stake a 146-82 victory over Bridgewater State University on Jan. 8.

Starke was also part of the 200-meter medley relay that won in a time of 2:03.17.

Starke followed that up by securing victories in the 50-meter freestyle (25.90), the 100-meter freestyle (1:00.37) and placed fourth in the 400-meter freestyle (5:41.80) in a 113-72 victory over Mount Saint Mary College on Jan. 11.

Langlois, Theriault reach double-digits as HCC falls

HOLYOKE ­– Agawam’s Emily Langlois scored a team-high 13 points and Westfield’s Ashley Theriault chipped in with 11, but it wasn’t nearly enough for the Holyoke Community College women’s basketball team as Massasoit Community College had four players reach double figures in an 82-40 loss on Jan. 7.

WNE to host Girls and Women in Sports Day

SPRINGFIELD –Western New England University will host the 15th annual Girls and Women in Sports Day on Feb. 8 at the Alumni Healthful Living Center. This program is designed for girls from the Greater Springfield area ages 7 to 12 years old.

Participants have the opportunity to pre-select two sport clinics. Clinics will be instructed by Western New England coaches and varsity student-athletes, including both instruction and time for play. In addition, recreation time will be made available for swimming, racquetball and squash. Light snacks will be provided. Pickup is at 12:30 p.m.

Following the GWSD events, families are invited to attend the women’s and men’s basketball games as the Golden Bears will take on Nichols College starting at 1 p.m.
