Thomka is Rookie-of-the-Week

SPRINGFIELD Western New England College freshman Brad Thomka of Springfield (Cathedral High School) was named The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Men's Basketball Rookie-of-the-Week on Dec. 3.

Thomka, a 6'5" forward, averaged 11.7 points and 5.7 rebounds in three games for the Golden Bears while shooting 55.0% from the field (11-for-20) and 72.2% from the foul line (13-for-18).

In his first varsity start Thomka compiled season highs of 18 points, eight rebounds and four blocks in 25 minutes in a 73-68 win at Massachusetts College.

Thomka also contributed 12 points, four rebounds, and two blocks in a 59-54 victory over city rival Springfield College in the Pioneer Valley Men's Hoop Classic. He then tallied five points with five rebounds in a 63-51 loss against top-ranked and defending NCAA Division III champion Amherst at the Classic.

Also contributing in the win over Springfield were junior forward Kyle Fredette who had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds along with a tournament record six blocked shots. Sophomore guard Chris DeVine of Wilbraham (Minnechaug Regional High School) chipped in with seven points, five rebounds, and pair of assists.
