Wakefield’s first collegiate goal lifts BU over Boston College

Date: 8/28/2014

BOSTON – Thanks to a pair of second-half strikes, including freshman and East Longmeadow native Christina Wakefield’s first collegiate goal, the Boston University (BU) women’s soccer team erased a 1-0 halftime deficit and defeated No. 19 Boston College (BC), 2-1, on Aug. 24 at Nickerson Field.

BC grabbed the early advantage off its first corner kick of the contest, but BU evened the score eight minutes into the second half on a goal from Longmeadow’s Jenna Fisher.

The Terriers eventually broke through with the game winner when Rachel Blauner beat two defenders and dribbled into the area and sent a perfect ball across the turf for Wakefield, who sped down the right side, met the cross at the right post and finished.

Fisher also tallied the tying goal in the season opener against LaSalle on Aug. 22. With two goals in the first two games, she tied her season total from a year ago and earned Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors.

BU will travel to South Carolina to face the No. 14 Gamecocks on Aug. 29 before also taking on College of Charleston in Columbia on Aug. 31.
