GREATER SPRINGFIELD – The West Region girls soccer team who won the gold medal on July 19 in the Bay State Games played in Waltham.
The girls came out of the round robin games at 3-2-0, as the second seed. The West reached the gold medal game for the seventh year in a row, earning five gold medals and two silver.
In the Finals the West team gave up an early goal but battled back and controlled the majority of the play in the first half scoring two goals before the whistle to gain a 2-1 lead at half time.
Isabella Eduardo of Chicopee High School scored on a beautifully executed chip of the goalkeeper on a breakaway and Sarah Carron of Agawam High School put the West on top to stay as she broke in from the right wing and fired a shot glancing off the keeper landing into the back of the net.
West continued to play strongly in the second half creating several opportunities. Megan McGuill of Monson High School put a comeback out of reach as she finished midway through the second half with a strong header from a corner kick placing the ball in the lower left corner of the net.
Local members of the team also included Erin McDermott of Westfield, Jill Murphy of East Longmeadow, Tamara Nicholson of Chicopee, Caleigh O'Brien of Wilbraham, Nissa Pereira of Ludlow, Kylie Ratelle of Chicopee, Julia Santangelo of Westfield, Caitlyn Shean of Agawam and Morgan Strassburg of Longmeadow.
