CMSS Community Jazz Jam to feature jazz legends
SPRINGFIELD Legendary jazz great Avery Sharpe and his renowned trio will present a free community jazz jam at the Community Music School of Springfield (CMSS) on the evening of Oct. 29 from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
The event is made possible by a grant from Chamber Music America, which has funded the trio's work with students at the Community Music School during a multi-week residency this fall.
Since earlier this month, the trio has worked with preschoolers in the new Prelude Preschool of the Arts; with juvenile offenders in two area Department of Youth Services facilities; and with jazz students at CMSS.
"The grant has provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for CMSS students to work with an ensemble of the caliber of the Avery Sharpe Trio," said Mary Ellen Miller, Director of Faculty and Students at the school.
The Community Jazz Jam will offer a similar experience for advanced jazz students, both young people and adults, to play with and learn from Sharpe on bass, Onaje Allan Gumbs on piano and Winard Harper on drums. The public is invited to bring an instrument and jam with the legends, or enjoy the music from the audience.
For additional information, please call CMSS at 732-8428. Parking is free in the school's adjacent parking garage.
