The Best Damn Takeout: El ComalitoDate: 6/29/2020 EASTHAMPTON - With our new edition of The Reminder finally hitting Easthampton, what better way to bring it in than with our first Best Damn Takeout for the area, starting with El Comalito, a Mexican, Salvadoran hybrid restaurant.
While Easthampton is a bit of a hike from Hampden, the food must have just come out as soon as I arrived because by the time I was home the food was still hot almost 45 minutes after picking it up.
Rather than taking the trip to grab takeout for myself, my whole family got involved and we all ordered an array of different appetizers, including beef and chicken empanadas, nachos and the pupusas, while my dad and I each ordered our own meals.
The family favorite for the appetizers was the Nachos Supreme, which came topped with refried pinto beans, sour cream, cheese, pico de gallo and jalapenos. We opted for the ground beef, but they can also come with avocado, grilled chicken or steak. My mom would not stop raving about how much she loved the nachos.
The second favorite was the pupusas, which El Comalito's website calls the national dish of El Salvador. The pupusas themselves are three corn tortillas stuffed with a filling of your choice, and we opted for one with just cheese, another with jalapenos and cheese, and the final one with beans cheese and pork, all of which were fantastic. For my meal I went with the El Salvadoran Burger, an exclusive to the Easthampton branch, and it was excellent. The patty itself is a homemade Salvadoran one, mixed with beef, onion, peppers and parsley, all topped with lettuce, tomato, avocado, ketchup, mayo and jalapenos.
My dad ended up going with a chorizo burrito, which came wrapped around Spanish rice, black beans, lettuce, pico, sour cream and cheese. He was a big fan of the burrito and said, "It was tasty and full of a lot of good stuff."
Then for dessert we ordered the churros with chocolate sauce for us to share along with a Tres Leches cake for my brother and a piece of flan for my mom. While I did not try the cake or the flan, the churros were a cinnamon delight filled with an excellent Bavarian cream.
If you are in the area and looking for Mexican or Salvadoran food, you cannot go wrong with El Comalito in Easthampton.
For pickup orders, El Comalito also offers a menu of alcoholic beverages and we had ordered the virgin margarita mix, but unfortunately it did not make it home with me as it spilled on the way back during the crazy thunderstorms that hit the area that day. But I can only imagine that would have been just as good as the rest of the food.
While we placed a call to pick up an order at the restaurant, residents of Easthampton can also order online through DoorDash on the restaurant's website, elcomalitorestaurantbar.com, where the full menu is also available.
El Comalito is located at 126 Northampton St.
