F.L. Roberts and Company fined by DEP
SPRINGFIELD The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has assessed F.L. Roberts and Company, Inc. a penalty of $5,750 for violating state regulations governing air quality and hazardous waste.
The violations were discovered during MassDEP's inspections of the company's Allen Street, West Broad Street, and West Columbus Avenue facilities in Springfield, and the company's Whately and Palmer facilities. Violations included improper maintenance and vapor recovery systems, inadequate recordkeeping and failure to notify MassDEP of waste oil generation activities.
"Vapor recovery systems include special nozzles, hoses and pumps designed to capture gasoline vapors that are displaced when fuel storage tanks are being filled or when vehicles are being refueled," said Michael Gorski director of MassDEP's Springfield office. "It is important to adequately maintain these systems in order to prevent gasoline fumes from entering the atmosphere."
The inspections were conducted in June 2006, October 2006, and January 2007. Some of the facilities inspected in June 2006 were re-inspected in October 2006, where MassDEP found some of the same violations that were observed during the first inspections.
MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
