MacDuffie student selected as local TV co-hostDate: 5/15/2009 SPRINGFIELD MacDuffie sophomore Quinn Hegarty kicks off season five of WGBY's "Making It Here: TeenStyle" as the new co-host. He joins host Shelby Leshine of Longmeadow in the weekly show, which features teens in western New England and the work they're doing every day. It airs on Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m.
Hegarty, an East Longmeadow resident, was selected from a large pool of talented teens from several area high schools.
"It's been a great experience for me, working in TV as compared to live stage performances," Hegarty, who is involved in school theater and just completed his role as Freddy Eynsford-Hill in MacDuffie's recent production of "My Fair Lady," said.
He has been a playwright at the Drama Studio in Springfield for eight years, a member of the staff for the Magnet, MacDuffie's school newspaper, and sings in MacApella, a student-run a capella group. He hopes to study either writing or theater in college.
Hegarty does research and conducts interviews for the "Business 411" portion of the show, in which business leaders share advice about getting started on a career path. His diverse subjects range from U.S. District Court Judge Richard Posner to Emanuel "Manny" Rovithis, the founder and owner of Manny's TV and Appliances.
"Quinn hit the ground running, and we're very pleased with our selection," Meagan Murphy Forget, WGBY producer, said. "He's been great on the show, as he's very thoughtful and observant, smooth and articulate. He delivers the questions in a very meaningful way."
"It's fun to see how the show comes together," said Hegarty, who, despite a very busy student life at the MacDuffie School, keeps it all in stride, as he manages to find time to research his TV subjects and prepare "questions that teens would be interested in."
"It's a great opportunity, and I'm very grateful to have been chosen as co-host," Hegarty, said.
Wilbraham resident Christen Sparago, an accomplished flutist, member of the Boston Youth Symphony and a fellow tenth grader at the MacDuffie School, will be a featured guest on the show airing May 11 at 7:30 p.m., and will be interviewed by host and Longmeadow resident Shelby Leshine.
