Agawam Lions Club, Building Bridges Veterans to host monthly luncheons

Date: 5/25/2021

AGAWAM – The Agawam Lions Club and Building Bridges Veterans have partnered to host a free monthly luncheon beginning June 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Veterans will be allowed to bring one guest.

The luncheons will take place at St. David’s Episcopal Church on the first Tuesday every month at the same time.

“These were incredibly well-attended and were a positive for our local veterans in 2019 and the beginning of 2020. Our hearts are happy that these lunches are resuming!” Secretary of the Agawam Lions Club Cheryl Terramagra said.

The Building Bridges Veterans Initiative is a program of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts to provide these meals. Their mission is to create veteran communities around a weekly or monthly lunch which fosters collegiality and mutual support. Building Bridges luncheons are offered on a monthly basis in other local communities as well.

They partner with other veteran service providers, agencies, and nonprofits to address the challenges U.S. veterans face. Along with the meals, they have programs that address Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and how to treat it.

According to the organization, Building Bridges began in 2012 when Bishop Doug Fisher identified American veterans as a critically underserved and “tragically marginalized” population that the church felt called to embrace. Homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction in the veteran population is what called Bishop Fisher to commit to and launch Building Bridges Veterans Initiative.
