AGAWAM – On May 19, the Agawam Little League will host their fifth annual golf tournament at St. Anne Country Club in Feeding Hills. The tournament helps fundraise to support Agawam Little League’s youth baseball and softball programs.
Scott Couture, Senior League co-coordinator for Agawam Little League, shared, “This event started off to raise money for the kids. So far, we’ve done very well. Each year, we’ve raised a little more than the last. We’ve sold out every year but one.”
Since the inception of the Agawam Little League Annual Golf Tournament, the Agawam Little League has installed two batting cages at School Street Park in Agawam, new fencing for Field 1 and Field 2 at School Street Park, a new batting cage at St. John the Evangelist Church in Agawam and a new backstop.
“We’ve given a lot back to the kids,” Couture said.
Couture said that hosting the event at St. Anne’s Country Club has always been a successful collaboration. “We’ve always held the tournament at St. Anne’s Country Club. They’ve always taken care of us. They’re a wonderful group who cares about the people in town,” Couture said.
The tournament will kick off with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Activities at the event include raffles, a fully catered continental breakfast and dinner and 18 holes of golf. Couture shared, “Last year, we had food like fish, roast beef, veggies and chicken. We’ve had 75-100 raffle prizes ranging from a gift card to a flat screen television in the past. We always keep it fresh to fundraise for the kids.”
Tickets to participate in the tournament cost $99 each. Included in admission is 18 holes of golf, a cart, continental breakfast and dinner. Students who have a valid ID will receive a $20 discount on admission.
Couture said he feels that it is important for the community to be involved in the fundraiser. “The biggest thing is that it’s for the kids. What I’m seeing in history is that you don’t see people down at the ball field throwing the ball back and forth anymore. You see them at home in front of the Xbox. We are trying to keep these fields up for the kids and get them playing outside. Usually, if kids wanted to being on a traveling baseball team, it would cost over $1,000. For much less, kids can play on the team. It keeps the kids excited. It helps us keep up everything for the kids,” Couture said.
