Agawam Parks and Rec. to reopen spring programming

Date: 3/17/2021

AGAWAM – Agawam Parks and Recreation is currently slowly planning spring programs and park openings, while maintaining all proper COVID-19 guidelines and protocols.

Christopher Sparks, Parks and Recreation director, said they will be opening spring sports such as baseball, lacrosse, and soccer, to begin in April. All outdoor fields will be ready when the time comes.

“Last year, we had to be careful about the programs offered,” said Sparks.

However, this year, more programs will be offered. Sparks shared that the biggest of them all is Perry Lane Summer Camp, as it was shut down last year.

Sparks said they are currently planning all aspects of Perry Lane. Some adjustments to the camp this year include the number of kids allowed, reducing counts from 180 down to 100. By April, Sparks explained, there will be promotions, advertisements and information on how to register. Only Agawam  children will be able to attend.

All programs that will be held by Parks and Rec have been approved by the mayor and the health director, Sparks added.

Additional activities and reopenings will soon include youth golf, tennis programs, pickleball courts and the track. There is no permission yet for the basketball hoops to be put back, based on the state and local Board of Health.

On April 26, high school sports such as tennis and track will begin, and Parks and Rec. will follow swiftly behind them.

“We did offer summer concerts last year and are planning that again for this year. They will be music only – no food or raffles,” stated Sparks.

Sparks assured, “We are trying to move forward safely.”
