AGAWAM – After having conducted air quality tests in the Agawam Public Library, results have found mold in four areas throughout the building. While a private company works to deep clean the walls, furniture and floors, along with conducting further tests, the library will remain closed.
According to the library, “Damage caused by months of heavy rain and a recent broken water pipe are being remediated.”
The pipe burst less than two weeks ago and caused water damage in the building. “The building will reopen as soon as we know the air quality is safe for our patrons and staff,” they continued.
Mayor William Sapelli said, “We are fortunate that the main areas of the building and our collection of books and periodicals are undamaged. But we will need some time to perform the remediation necessary to make the building safe for patrons and staff.”
In the meantime, the Agawam Senior Center will be providing temporary library services. The services provided and hours of operation have not been released as of press time.
The Agawam Public Library has locked their drop box for book returns and asks residents to hang on to them. All overdue fees will be waived. Once the library reopens, residents will have extra time to pick up their items on hold.
They concluded, “We appreciate your patience and look forward to serving you again, in person, very soon.”
