Senior Games billiards to be hosted at Agawam Senior Center

Date: 8/2/2023

AGAWAM — The Massachusetts Senior Games billiards competiton is a two-day event for seniors 50 years or older.

This year’s competition will be hosted by the Agawam Senior Center on Aug. 7-8. Check-in and practice will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Aug. 7. Players who win at least three of the five games played in each session will move on to the next round, which begins at 10 a.m. on Aug. 8.

Mike Squindo said this is the first time in his tenure as director of the Senior Center that Agawam has hosted this statewide competition.

“While I don’t meet the age requirement to play, I will be there to make an appearance and cheer on the players,” Squindo said. He mentioned how he had read an article in Go Local that explained all the benefits of billiards.

“It’s a really good activity to keep people moving and active,” said Squindo.

Registration for the games will close on Aug. 4, and the bracket is limited to 16 participants. The top three finishers in their gender and age group will receive gold, silver or bronze medals. Competitors from out of state can participate, but if one takes first place, the top Massachusetts finisher will also receive a gold medal. No out-of-state competitor can displace a Massachusetts resident from any spot that would qualify them for the biennial National Senior Games, so more than one athlete may receive gold, silver, or bronze medals. There are no cash prizes.

The center is located at 954 Main St., Agawam, and the event will run rain or shine.
