Approval from the Commonwealth will signal start of project

Date: 3/14/2019

CHICOPEE – The city’s Historical Commission voted to approve a letter of support for the redevelopment of the Cabotville Mills to send to the Commonwealth’s Historic Commission.

The Commission voted to send the letter at its March 12 meeting.

Barbara Myrick, the property manager for Silverbrick LLC, explained to the commission approval from the Commonwealth is the green light the developers need to begin the process of turning the historic factory building into 600 units of new market rate apartments over two phases of construction, and the creation of 400,000 square feet of non-residential space.

In the letter to Secretary of State William Galvin, the commission noted the industrial complex is “an ever present reminder of the city’s industrial past.” The letter asserted the renovation of the building is “the quintessential project to unleash the potential of the city’s center.”

Joshua Clark, the commission’s chair, said the commission is “very enthusiastic” about the project.

Myrick explained the developers have permits to construct two model units – a one bedroom and a studio – to show people their vision. Once the permissions from the Commonwealth are secured, the developers can begin larger scale construction activities. She added they hope to have those permission granted so work could begin next month.

“We’re ready to go when they tell us to go,” Myrick said. She added, “It’s an amazingly beautiful building with so much history.”
