CHICOPEE – The Chicopee City Council met June 15 to discuss and approve a variety of agenda items including grants aiming to improve streetscapes and city signage.
The council approved the $200,000 Community Mitigation Fund Transportation Planning Grant during the meeting. Money from this grant will go toward the planning of Chicopee Center streetscape revisioning.
According to Planning Director Lee Pouliot, improvements from the grant will help with improved safety in downtown and better access to jobs and businesses.
Mayor John Vieau noted that streetscape improvements will also make Chicopee Center a place for residents and visitors to go and give the center a more “small-town feel.”
“We’re excited for the potential of the downtown and the direction that we’re headed in as we come out of COVID-19,” said Vieau.
Vieau mentioned the new weekly Center Fresh Farmer’s Market as another improvement to the area. He spoke on how it will help bring residents from Chicopee and beyond into Chicopee Center to support local businesses.
The council then approved grants from the Transformative Development Initiative (TDI) for branding and signage in downtown. The city will now move forward with installing better signage throughout the area.
Vieau said that this will help residents and visitors navigate downtown efficiently. With signage, he said that people will be able to know what downtown has to offer. Vieau also said that there will be an interactive app coming as part of this initiative.
During the meeting, Vieau announced that Chicopee will be hosting Independence Day fireworks on June 26 around 9 p.m. The decision has been highly awaited by many residents after there was a one-year absence due to COVID-19.
The meeting then moved into routine ordinance revisions and permit approvals.
