Chicopee City Council approves traffic study on Meadow Street

Date: 6/14/2023

CHICOPEE — The Chicopee Engineering Department will look into implementing a crosswalk on Meadow Street at the intersection of Meadow and Shaw Park Avenue, following unanimous approval from the City Council.

Ward 3 City Councilor Delmarina López explained that a resident came forward and expressed concern with the lack of sidewalk on Meadow Street. As there is a sidewalk on the other side of the street, she said there is no crosswalk for anyone to access that sidewalk.

López said this is an issue as there have been instances where people have been hit in that area, along with some fatalities.

“In order to improve pedestrian safety, I do think it’s important to look into a crosswalk on the Shaw Park Avenue and Meadow Street area because I think that’s a safe location where it’s far enough away from the [traffic] light and the Pride gas station, but still close enough to that particular area that doesn’t have a sidewalk on that side of the street,” López said.

She shared that she looks forward to working with the Engineering Department on installing a crosswalk and thanked the resident who brought this forward.

López made a motion to send this item to the Engineering Department for a traffic study and the City Council unanimously approved it.
