CHICOPEE – The Chicopee Fire Department celebrated the advancement of former Lt. Andrew Galik, who was officially sworn into his new captain position during a Jan. 20 ceremony.
Mayor John Vieau welcomed the Fire Department, Ward 8 Councilor Gary Labrie, Chicopee Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Julie Copoulos and Treasurer Marie Laflamme for the swearing-in ceremony. Vieau took the time to reflect on the Fire Department’s role in public safety during the challenges of the pandemic.
“It’s been nice to see the support of the men and women at the Fire Department during a time of need,” said Vieau. The mayor also wished a warm tribute to Galik, who celebrates his third promotion within the Chicopee Fire Department with his new captain position.
“You’ve earned it, you’ve earned the respect of your peers at every step. Congratulations on your achievement,” said Vieau.
Chicopee Fire Department Chief Daniel Stamborski used his speech to reflect on the hard work behind Galik’s journey. “We take management promotions very seriously…So much work, sacrifice and study go into promotions,” said Stamborski.
The fire chief also recognized the mayor and the City Council for their continual support of the department. Both parties announced that the fire department is receiving a three-year contract extension with the city during the Jan. 18 City Council meeting, which includes a 2 to 3 percent yearly pay raise and 2 percent retroactive pay for their work during the pandemic.
City Clerk Keith Rattell swore in Galik to his position, with Galik’s wife Amy completing the promotion by placing a commemorative pin on his jacket.
The mayor concluded the ceremony by honoring the fire department’s Administrative Operations Manager Angela Lukomski.
Vieau thanked Lukomski for her hard work and dedication as she retires from the department with 35 “monumental” years of service.
Stamborski recognized Lukomski as one of the department’s most dedicated members. “I’ve never seen an employee that doesn’t take a sick day,” said Stamborski. The mayor and the fire chief awarded Lukomski with a plaque to recognize her track record.
