CHICOPEE – After passing away suddenly on Nov. 10, Chicopee officials are extending their gratitude to former Detective Michael Dion.
Dion, 60, was the longest-tenured member of the Chicopee Police Department, serving as a member of the department for 39 years. Before becoming a detective, Dion served as a patrolman for more than 20 years, ultimately promoting up to the ranks of Senior Patrolman Detective for the department, according to Dion’s obituary.
In an interview with Reminder Publishing, Interim Deputy Chief Jeffery Gawron spoke about Dion’s revered status in the department. “He was liked by everyone. He was always positive, always willing to help others and assist where possible. He will be missed throughout the department” said Gawron. The deputy chief said that the department is hosting a public memorial for Dion outside of the department, as well as lowering all flags in the jurisdiction at half-staff to pay tribute.
In a statement from Mayor John Vieau’s office, he and his team reflected upon the positive impact Dion had on the entire city.
“Detective Dion always asked us to call him Mike as he was a friend to all. He was a considerate and caring individual who was committed to serving his community and fellow officers…Mike will be widely missed by the community and those who knew him best,” said the mayor’s Communications and Special Projects Manager Rachel Beaulieu on behalf of his office.
The Chicopee Police Department also made a joint statement about Dion’s multitude of roles within the department, ultimately revealing that he will posthumously receive the 2021 Chief’s Commendation Award and the 2021 Officer of the Year Award. “Throughout the course of his career, Detective Dion investigated numerous homicide cases, human trafficking cases and was directly involved in high profile felony arrests. Detective Dion also assisted numerous city agencies with Code Enforcement,” said the Chicopee Police Department in a joint statement.
The wake for Dion occurred on Nov. 19 at the Grise Funeral Home, while his funeral happened on Nov. 20 at Chicopee Comprehensive High School. Officers, local legislators and the public were welcomed to both memorials.
