CHICOPEE – The City of Chicopee hosted the official ribbon cutting for Center Park on April 23. The quarter acre lot has a pea gravel landing and 10-foot picnic tables that are canopied by four golden shade sails. The newly redesigned space will aim to attract food truck festivities, outdoor gatherings, and exercise classes in the coming summer months.
The transformation project was made possible with funds of $10,000 from MassDevelopment’s Transformative Development Initiative and $10,000 from MassDevelopment’s Commonwealth Places program.
Mayor John Vieau, Treasurer Marie LaFlamme, Chicopee TDI Fellow Andrea Monson and Executive Director of the Chicopee Chamber of Commerce Julie Copoulos were some attendees of the event. Vieau cut the ribbon to help kick off the start of the new space.
Businesses and food trucks interested in using the space are encouraged to apply beginning in mid-May. Permit applications will be available on the city, Chicopee Chamber of Commerce and Chicopee Center websites and have an expected processing time of about one month.
“We’re excited to see what’s happening and even more excited that this is only the beginning for Chicopee Center,” said Vieau. “Our center’s transforming. It’s becoming a socially safe destination.”
