Chicopee Pride returns for third celebration

Date: 6/14/2023

CHICOPEE — Hundreds of people turned out on June 10 for the third Chicopee Pride celebration. One of the organizers, Chicopee artist Johnny Miranda told Reminder Publishing this was the first time the event has been conducted outside. Mayor John Vieau told the audience, “Chicopee is a very inclusive, diverse city where everyone is welcome.” Chicopee Cultural Council Chair Jeanette Rivera said the event was six months in the making and added it “celebrates the beautiful diversity of our community.” She added, though, across the nation there are more than 400 proposed bills in state legislatures that would affect rights of LGBTQIA+ Americans. “We are here to make a stand against this legislation.”

The celebration featured performances by rappers and drag queens, a DJ, a parade and activities for the whole family. Vendors such as Bob Ryan of Springfield sold a variety of merchandise while Tapestry Health offered health advice. The Chicopee Public Library offered participants free water bottles.
