City gets more highway funds from Commonwealth

Date: 1/21/2020

CHICOPEE – The city of Chicopee will be receiving an additional $134,119 in state Chapter 90 funding – good news for road and infrastructure repair.

State Rep. Joseph Wagner recently made the announcement. In a written statement he said, “The Chapter 90 funds are an important source of aid for roadway projects in the city, to ensure that our streets are reliable and safe. This boost in funding will support Chicopee as they continue to make necessary repairs and improvement of our roads and transportation infrastructure for the remainder of the fiscal year.”

Wagner noted the increase is part of a greater $20 million investment included in a supplemental budget, which boosts Chicopee’s total Chapter 90 allocation to $1.48 million for fiscal year 2020.

Wagner explained Chapter 90 funds are “allocated to support roadway projects, such as resurfacing, drainage, and sidewalk repairs. The monies may also be used to replace, purchase or lease project-related road building machinery or equipment as property of the municipality. Awards are allocated based on a formula, which contemplates mileage, population, and employment statistics.”

Mayor John Vieau said, “Thank you to State Rep. Joseph Wagner and the rest of our legislative delegation for continuing to bring funding back to Chicopee.  This additional funding will be used towards our city’s infrastructure needs including sidewalk repair, street resurfacing, drainage improvements.”
