Eleven-million dollar hotel officially opens in Chicopee

Date: 5/18/2018

CHICOPEE – The developers and owners of Tru by Hilton, the region’s newest hotel, conducted its official grand opening May 15, an event that attracted about 100 people including a mayor, two state senators, three state representatives and a handful of other Chicopee city officials.

As Mayor Richard Kos said the new hotel, the first of its brand in Massachusetts, not only represents an $11 million investment by BK Investments, which also owns the Hampton Inn in the city, but also the creation of 30 full-time jobs and a new revenue stream in property tax and hotel tax.

“Everything here not only supports our city, but the region,” Kos told the audience.

The four-story building on Memorial Avenue has 108 rooms, which are smaller that standard hotel rooms. The concept is that Tru guest would rather be out of their rooms and be more social with other guests. The large lobby features a 24-hour snack store, a free breakfast feature, an area to talk with other guests, as well as an area to work. There are two foosball tables in the lobby.

Off the lobby are a fitness room and an in-door pool. The hotel also features free Wi-Fi and a 55-inch HDTV in every room with DIRECTV.

Getting out of the hotel room is underscored by a wall-sized mural in the lobby listing regional attractions from the Brimfield antique shows to the museums in the Quadrangle in Springfield. State Sen. Eric Lesser, who was among the officials who spoke at the program, described the mural as “awesome,” and added he wished such as mural could be at the State House to remind legislators of the strengths of Western Massachusetts.

In the elevator lobby area is a stylish bulletin board listing area events and restaurants.

Alexandra Jaritz, the Global head of the Tru brand, explained that Tru “acts differently thinks differently than other hotels in the mid-scale segment.”

She explained the brand is “targeting a mindset,” rather than an age group. She said the goal of the brand is to create “ a lively, unique environment.”

Jaritz noted the Chicopee location is the brand’s 22th hotel with more on the way.
