Improved boat ramp honors two local people

Date: 6/21/2021

CHICOPEE – The dedication of the new boat launch on Medina Street was not only a time to celebrate the new $1 million facility that will be vital for sports people as well as law enforcement, safety and environment officials, but was also a somber memorial to two people: Aiden Blanchard of Chicopee and John W. Coughlin Jr. of Agawam.

Blanchard, an 11-year-old who lost his life in the river earlier this year, is remembered by a granite park bench facing the river.  Near the bench, there is a plaque honoring Coughlin, who was a well-known environmental advocate who had worked on making the new boat launch a reality before his death in April.

Agawam Mayor William Sapelli said of Coughlin, “He was the kind of guy who always gave
of himself.”

Sapelli noted Coughlin was known for picking up trash around town and for advocating for legislation that would add a deposit for nip bottles to try to prevent their irresponsible disposal.

Coughlin lost his life when a car struck him as he was picking up trash in Agawam.

Ron Amidon, the commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game, recalled how Coughlin literally followed him around an outdoors show making his point advocating for the boat launch project. Coughlin worked on the boat launch project for 15 years, Amidon added.

Several different public safety officials commented on the importance of having the new boat launch. Amidon said it was one of seven such entry points into the river.

Michelle Blanchard, Aiden’s mother, said she appreciated the support she and her family have received during “this long and agonizing process.” She described her son as a “sweet and compassionate boy.”

She said of water safety, “I implore you to teach your children.” She added, “Safety should never be a compromise.”  The boat launch project took almost a year to construct and is operated by Chicopee Parks and Recreation Department. The improved boat ramp is for all boat types. Use of the site is free and open to the public.
