CHICOPEE — Patrick O’Donovan, Irish minister of state at the Department of Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform and at the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, visited Elms College on Sept. 18.
O’Donovan’s portfolio includes responsibility for the Gaeltacht, the districts of Ireland where Irish is the primary language.
During his visit at Elms, O’Donovan met with the college’s administrators, faculty and students, along with this year’s Irish Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Annie Jowett, who is teaching Irish at the college.
Elms President Harry Dumay explained that this is the college’s 15th year with the Fulbright, teaching the Irish language to students at the school.
He went on to say that the Irish connections at Elms College run deep and still continue today.
O’Donovan recognized the school for its Irish studies and thanked the college for its offerings.
“Investment in teaching and learning for another generation is invaluable,” O’Donovan said.
He noted that he would like to see the relationship deepened, between Elms college and other colleges of education in Europe.
O’Donovan was presented with a gift from Dumay, and vice versa.
