CHICOPEE — Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen and Pantry is hosting its annual golf tournament on Sept. 13 at Chicopee Country Club. The event will begin at 9 a.m.
The golf tournament is open to the public. At press time, 144 golfers were signed up for the tournament — 34 foursomes — with three foursomes available.
Sponsorships are still available, however, Executive Director Kim Caisse said they must be in soon. She noted that raffle prizes are still being accepted as well.
To sign up for the tournament or become a sponsor, visit lorrainessoupkitchen.com, send an email or visit the kitchen at 170 Pendexter Ave.
Lorraine’s, which is a nonprofit organization, is dependent on donations to help serve those facing food insecurity. Caisse explained that the golf tournament has taken place for many years as a major fundraiser for the soup kitchen. All the money is used for any expenses they might need, she shared.
Since this time last year, the number of clients Lorraine’s serves has increased by over 75%. Caisse said she thinks this is a result of increasing economic stress with housing, food and rent costs.
She added that the organization has received fewer donations than usual.
“We’re really getting hit hard … It’s scary,” said Caisse.
In past years, Caisse said the golf tournament has raised between $15,000 and $20,000.
She shared, “We are grateful for everything that we get.”
Caisse said that people can come just for the dinner at the golf course following the tournament. It is $30 per person and participants must register ahead of time. The dinner is usually around 2 or 3 p.m. — whenever the golf tournament ends.
