CHICOPEE – McKinstry Market Garden Inc. began a new era when they demolished their original farm stand last December. The McKinstry family, who have been farming for over 100 years, did this to make way for a new, more advanced store at their 753 Montgomery St. location. After beginning construction in January, the new store opened on May 14.
According to Will McKinstry, a fourth generation farmer for McKinstry Market Garden Inc., they opened their new greenhouse on May 7. He said that the response from the community was great and they had many customers come out.
McKinstry said that their new store will sell produce, local maple syrup, honey and more. McKinstry said it will be comparable to Atkin’s Farm and Randalls.
“We’re hoping to have a wide variety of products like that, but we’re staying true to specializing in produce,” said McKinstry.
Hours for the store will be Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Compared to their farm stand, the new store will have more square footage, heat and air conditioning, more technological advancements and the ability to be open year round. McKinstry said they plan to stay open through at least Christmas before taking a possible break until Easter.
“We haven’t decided that yet, but it is a possibility,” he said.
McKinstry said he is most excited about reuniting with customers that he hasn’t seen since the demolition.
“I’m just really excited to see some of our customers again. It’s been a while since the fall,” he said.
After the May 14 opening, some minor construction will still take place.
“There’s still a lot of minor details that they’ll be working on finishing up after hours, but we’ll be open from then throughout the entire season,” said McKinstry.
