New city councilors bring young blood to Chicopee’s political arena

Date: 11/9/2017

CHICOPEE – There was some movement on both the School Committee and the City Council during the Nov. 7 election with two new City Councilors and two new School Committee members. Mayor Richard Kos ran unopposed.

Both new councilors – Ward 1’s Joel McAuliffe and Ward 6’s Derek Gregory Dobosz – are under the age of 30 adding some youth to the council.

James Tanhauser won the Ward 1 School Committee seat, while David Michael Schryver won the Ward 8 position.

Reminder Publications spoke to winning Ward 1 candidate Joel McAuliffe at his victory party at TD’s Pub in Aldenville. He said he wasn’t surprised about his win over Brunetti, who had previously served on the council, based on what voters had been telling him since his campaign began in July.

McAuliffe had run for School Committee previously, and is politically active. He is an aide to state Sen. Eric Lesser and had been very active in the campaign to elect Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi.

He said he learned from the Cocchi campaign that direct contact with voters is “essential.”

McAuliffe said, “We talked to literally everyone who voted in this election.”

Botch Cocchi and Lesser campaigned with McAuliffe. “I share the same values they share,” he said.

On his list of priorities is “making sure Chicopee is in the forefront of supporting high speed rail,” which McAuliffe said would have “incredible economic benefits.”

He also wants to advocate for the creation of a municipal high speed Internet service for the city as well for greater attention to the condition of roads and sidewalks.
