Program to guide students applying for scholarships

Date: 1/24/2019

CHICOPEE – High School students and their parents will have the chance to learn about a wide variety of scholarships at the second annual Strategic Scholarship Support Night and Spaghetti Supper.

The event, which requires pre-registration – will be Feb. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Chicopee Comprehensive High School’s student cafeteria. There will be a $2 donation asked for the dinner, the proceeds of which will be used to establish a new scholarship.

The snow date will be Feb. 13.

Kara Blanchard, director of Career Development Education & Workbased Learning at Chicopee Public Schools and College and career Counselor Carrie Chevalier, both spoke to Reminder Publishing about the event. Chevalier said that families “were very happy with it “ last year that spurred the event returning this year.

Blanchard explained the event is creating an opportunity to inform students and their families of the funding that is available through scholarships.

She continued, “Not everyone has had a child go through the school system before and these scholarships are not particularly well advertised. Parents may know a few of them.”

One of the advantages of the event is that it features representatives of local scholarship programs who will speak with students and their parents about them, Blanchard explained.

She added the goal is to make sure students and their families understand what is required of them to successfully apply for the many scholarships that are available.

Chevalier said, for instance, that representatives from the Western New England University merit scholarships program would be there to answer questions.

Part of the evening will also be dedicated to meeting with people who can speak with students about financial aid resources.

The school’s guidance counselors will also be in attedance to assist students.
