CHICOPEE – Despite concerns surrounding the omicron variant leading to a truncated ceremony, Chicopee Mayor John Vieau and the city’s city council were sworn into their respective positions during the Jan. 3 Inauguration Ceremony at Elms College.
In his Inauguration address, Vieau spoke about his gratitude for Chicopee voters after winning in an unopposed bid for his second term as mayor. “I am humbled and honored to be elected by the voters of Chicopee for another term. My goal is the same; continue to do what’s right and to focus on the best interest of the city of Chicopee,” said Vieau.
The mayor took time to reflect on an arduous first term that was defined by unforeseen circumstances with the pandemic. “Many mayors before me were challenged with massive flooding, financial difficulty and even a great depression. In 2020, we too we’re tested. The city was placed on pause by a global pandemic, but Chicopee always remains stable,” said Vieau.
He complimented his team and other city offices for continuing to offer essential services over the pandemic while also highlighting the city’s COVID-19 Task Force for guiding the city through difficult circumstance.
Looking ahead to his second two-year term, Vieau discussed several developments he plans for his next term, including the continual economic development of downtown Chicopee. “We will be focusing on our infrastructure, our parks, economic development, new growth and affordable and market rate housing…we will continue to concentrate on the downtown area of Chicopee and all of its potential,” said Vieau.
The mayor also spoke about his plans to grow the city’s public safety departments. “Public safety is paramount to the success of our city. My administration is committed to keeping residents safe as we continue to recruit, hire and train first responders as we get closer to a full complement in each department,” said Vieau.
Vieau then highlighted his focus on utilizing American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds toward city-wide improvements. “My administration and the city’s ARPA committee will make the most out of this once in a lifetime opportunity…we want to take those funds and make a long-term impact on the city,” said Vieau.
In his conclusion, the mayor expressed his firm belief in Chicopee and the city’s future. “I look forward to working together to promote Chicopee pride wherever I go. I sit here and say this with all my heart, I truly believe in this city, and I always have,” said Vieau.
