VOC transforms Kendall Building into homes

Date: 11/16/2017

CHICOPEE – A building that has been long a part of downtown has been given a new purpose.

The Kendall Building has been the subject of a $4 million rehabilitation by the Valley Opportunity Council (VOC) and transformed into 41 units of housing.

On Nov. 8. Mayor Richard Kos and Assistant Undersecretary Susan Terrey of the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) joined Huntley at a formal ribbon cutting.

VOC Executive Director Steve Huntley said the building is already nearly at capacity. “All but one unit is claimed,” Huntley said.

Huntley said the transformation included “an absolutely gut rehab” and the correction of structural issues. Each studio unit has individual heating and cooling controls, a private bathroom and a kitchenette.

The housing is designed for low income/workforce people Huntley said with an income of $31,000 or less.

The renovation was funded with state and federal money from DHCD and with Chicopee HOME grant funding.

Kos noted, “It’s not easy to have a building like this saved.”
