ECA+ Gallery presents Van Winkle exhibitDate: 6/5/2015 EASTHAMPTON – Michael Van Winkle exhibits “If it has a name” at the ECA+ Gallery from June 4 to 25.
The opening reception coincides with Art Walk Easthampton on June 13, 5 to 8 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
Michael Van Winkle creates fictitious spaces that are filled with abstract shapes and colorful patterns that are juxtaposed with familiar objects and imagery. His daily studio practice incites improvisation and layering that link one work to the next and capture a sense of exploration of his developed visual vocabulary.
From a statement, Van Winkle wrote, “The dialogue between painted characters opens a kinetic, relational space. It is creating this broad perceptual arena of relationships which fuels my work. I want these pictures to create a trajectory into our imaginations and encourage deciphering through observation, invention and memory.”
After receiving a Masters of Fine Arts in 2008 from the State University of New York at Albany in Albany, N.Y., Van Winkle moved to Easthampton where he now lives and has a studio. He has exhibited at Vox Populi Gallery (Philadelphia), Historic Northampton Museum, and Northampton Center for the arts. His work is included in the collections of the Boston Drawing Project of Carroll & Sons (Boston) and the Flatfile Art Space (New Haven).
The ECA+ Gallery is located in Easthampton’s old Town Hall at 43 Main Street. The gallery is open Monday to Thursday, noon to 6 p.m. For more information, please see EasthamptonCityArts.com.
