Gallery A3 to host first ever open juried by Yarlow in JulyDate: 5/29/2014 AMHERST – Gallery A3, a member-based contemporary fine art gallery, will present its first-ever open, juried show July 3 to Aug. 2.
The juror is Loretta Yarlow, director of the University Museum of Contemporary Art (UMCA) in Amherst. Exhibited works will come from artists throughout the Pioneer Valley.
Gallery A3, in the center of Amherst in the Amherst Cinema Complex, has been a vital part of the Amherst cultural community for twelve years. The gallery founded the Amherst Art Walk, which is now a regular part of the Amherst cultural landscape. The gallery presents visual art exhibitions each month, along with regular monthly programs of art forums, poetry readings, and music and dance performances.
Developing a juried show is next in a long line of creative undertakings for Gallery A3. This will be a chance for artists to show (and sell) their work in the center of Amherst where there is much traffic and cultural interest between the Amherst Cinema Center and Amherst Coffee as well as the Jones Library.
In addition to the July 3 Art Walk opening, there is an artists' reception on July 12, 4 to 7 p.m. On July 17 at 7:30 p.m. there will be an Art Forum on the creative process of curating an exhibition. Loretta Yarlow will discuss the works she selected for the show and how she conceived of and constructed the exhibition. The Art Forum is supported in part by a grant from the Amherst Cultural Council, a local agency, which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
Yarlow has been the director of UMCA in Amherst since 2005. She has experience as a curator, critic, and director of professional and academic galleries around the world. She served as Director of Exhibitions at Pratt Institute and was director/curator of the Art Gallery of York University in Toronto, Canada. In 1997 she was curator of the Canadian pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
