'Sounds of Summer' brings music to Blunt ParkDate: 7/27/2009 SPRINGFIELD - The park will be alive with the sounds of music - specifically, Blunt Park will host "Sounds of Summer - Concerts in the Parks," a series that will run through Aug. 4. The outdoor concerts, all scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m., are open to the public and free of charge.
The Springfield Department of Parks, Buildings & Recreation Management received a generous grant from the Springfield Cultural Council, a division of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, to bring professional music groups to Springfield's beautiful neighborhood park.
According to Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, the series is purposely designed to be a family event. Picnicking is encouraged, and old-fashioned barbecue food is available at a low fee as well. Families and friends should bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the concerts. Music is a common denominator in creating a communal atmosphere to those who live close to one another. We anticipate that this will be the case for each concert.
Patrick J. Sullivan, Executive Director of Parks, Buildings & Recreation Management, said that the population has varied musical tastes, and the music was, accordingly, selected with that in mind.
Upcoming concerts include:
• Eight to the Bar, performing boogie woogie, rhythm and blues and soul music, on July 28
• Prime Time Players, performing motown and pop, on Aug. 4.
