Student photographers’ work on display at Valley Photo Center

SPRINGFIELD – A new photo exhibit featuring the work of valley middle, high school, and college student photographers will be on display until May 16 at the Valley Photo Center (VPC) gallery located on the upper level of Tower Square at 1500 Main St.

The second annual student photo show is an opportunity for students to display their work in a gallery. They also have an opportunity to win awards and prizes in categories for the best print from an elementary, middle, high school, and college student as well as best print from their school.

The best in category award winners for this year are:

• Best photograph by a middle school student – Oh Brother by Gabrielle Steward, STEM Middle School, Springfield.

• Best photograph by a high school student – Study in Black & White by Dominique Burgess, High School of Commerce, Springfield.

• Best photograph by a college student – My Sister by Carleigh Harrington, Holyoke Community College, Holyoke.

The best photographs from schools awards went to:

• Granby Middle School, Granby – Anatomy of a Light Bulb by Anabel Erren.

• Granby High School, Granby – Flowers Welcoming the First Day of Spring by Katie Bernash.

• Longmeadow High School, Longmeadow – Tree Line by Julia Langone.

• Holyoke Community College, Holyoke – My Sister by Carleigh Harrington.

• High School of Commerce, Springfield – Study in Black & White by Dominique Burgess. The judges also awarded an honorable mention for Exit One by Joseph Jones.

• STEM Middle School Academy, Springfield – Oh Brother by Gabrielle Steward.

• Central High School, Springfield – My Hero, My Dad by Dominique Burgess.

• Greenfield Community College, Greenfield – Door in the Woods by Kristina McComb.

• Minnechaug Regional High School, Wilbraham – Florence Italy Statue by Yaroslav McCarthy.

• Hopkins Academy, Hadley – Washing Away the Shadows by Greta Kurtz.

• South Hadley High School, South Hadley – Rusty Pipes by Keley Guenther.

• Springfield Technical Community College Springfield – Roman Forum by Anthony Gaudino.

There will be one final prize, the People’s Choice Award. Everyone visiting the show is invited to vote for their favorite photograph and at the end of the show all of the votes will be tallied to select the winner.

The Valley Photo Center Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., is open to the public, and admission is free.

The VPC is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit Corporation whose mission is to educate its members and the public about the art and science of photography to bring about a greater appreciation for photography.
