AMHERST — Kiernan Gulick-Sherrill, owner and head technician of Green Earth Computers in Amherst, is helping the tech world stay eco-friendly.

"A lot of people think of computer repair as something that cannot be green. Everything that's in a computer can be recycled," Gulick-Sherrill explained, noting that 99.9 percent of computer parts can be recycled.

Gulick-Sherrill's business is focused around helping users of today's technology stay green when they need to upgrade. Green Earth Computers recycles computers, laptops and cell phones; offers Department of Defense-certified secure data wiping services to protect users' personal information; recycles ink toner cartridges; rebuilds computers with recycled parts, and so can offer custom-built, energy-efficient computers; and builds computers that consume less energy.

"Computer repair is green," Gulick-Sherrill said. "Rather than buying a brand new item, you're fixing something and extending the life of existing technology."

Gulick-Sherrill has become an expert on where to responsibly recycle various computer parts and best locations for recycling toner cartridges, cell phones and other technological devices.

"I put a lot of effort in my business into researching and being knowledgeable about who can offer recycling in the area, so we keep this kind of technology out of the landfills," he said.

Green Earth Computers donates money received from toner cartridges to charity, offers recycling services for free and can set businesses and other offices up with their own electronics recycling collection boxes.
