Hampden Bank celebrates its 158th anniversary

Date: 4/26/2010

Springfield -- On April 13, 1852 Hampden Savings Bank was officially chartered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to serve the workers of the Western Railroad.

From a rented office space in the basement of the then Agawam National Bank on the corner of Lyman and Main streets, and in accordance with a decree from the Massachusetts Great and General Court to locate "within twenty-five rods of the Western Railroad passenger depot," Hampden Savings Bank began operations.

Tom Burton, president and CEO of Hampden Bank, is shown cutting the birthday cake honoring Hampden Bank's 158th birthday.

From those humble beginnings over 158 years ago, today's Hampden Bank is one of the region's most successful community banks with nine offices throughout Hampden County and over $577 million in assets. According to Thomas R. Burton, president and CEO, "Although much has changed in banking since 1852, thankfully, providing customers with extraordinary service and being committed to the local community never goes out of style. These are the major reasons why we're still here and thriving even in the midst of these troubled economics times."

Burton continued, "Reaching this milestone on my watch is indeed a privilege. I couldn't be more proud of our people, of who we are, and what we've accomplished on behalf of those we serve. As we move toward the end of this first decade of the 21st century I can assure you we will not rest on our laurels; we will continue to vigorously support our communities; and we will work tirelessly to brighten the days of our customers."
