Shames to be presented with prestigious award

Cantor Emeritus Morton Shames of Temple Beth El, Springfield will be presented with the prestigious Samuel Rosenbaum Award by the Cantors Assembly at their national convention in Los Angeles on May 7.

Shames is best known in our community as an active member of the Board of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, a founding leader of the Community Music School of Springfield and soloist with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra bringing music from the Jewish tradition of Hanukkah. In a recital in Merking Hall in New York City the New York Times referred to his singing as "passionate and refined." The city of Springfield joins the Jewish community in congratulating Shames on this high honor.
