JCC to offer ShockWave programDate: 6/5/2014 SPRINGFIELD – The Springfield Jewish Community Center (JCC) has become the first to offer ShockWave in Western Massachusetts.
Members Dan Weiswasser and Kristen Lyon are among the first to use a new technique called Shockwave. This circuit, referred to as the world’s most efficient total body workout, combines short-burst, high-intensity intervals on the WaterRower machines with functional strength stations that sculpt the legs, core and arms.
“Shockwave is unique. It’s a self-paced cardio challenge that also works your upper body, lower body and core,” Weiswasser said.
Shannon Ashcroft, JCC Group Exercise coordinator and ShockWave instructor added, “What makes this circuit class unique is that the timer is you. Participants perform their stations until the rowers have completed their pre-set distance.”
ShockWave creates an atmosphere for both teamwork and competition. Whether participants are racing to beat their own time or the day’s best, everyone in the room is cheering for all to finish.
“If you are feeling intimidated, there is nothing to worry about. ShockWave will push you to your max, not anyone else’s,” Ashcroft said. “The WaterRower allows for high-intensity but low-impact exercise.”
Those who have walked into a ShockWave class would notice the wave-like sound of the WaterRowers. The water resistance within the machines increases as a participants’ speed and intensity increase, allowing them to work at your own pace.
“Shockwave is efficient, fun, and very challenging,” Lyon said.
As part of the new and improved small group training program at the JCC, 1160 Dickinson St., ShockWave is offered in four-week sessions at a competitive cost. ShockWave attracts males and females, competitors and team players alike.
