Marathon Healthcare Center opening Alzheimer's Dementia Care Unit
SPRINGFIELD Marathon Healthcare Center of Springfield is gearing up to open a brand new secured Alzheimer's Dementia Care Unit in its 370 Pine St. Skilled Nursing Center. Beginning Feb. 25, the Marathon Healthcare Center of Springfield will be welcoming new residents to that unit.
Marathon Healthcare has recognized a dire need in the Greater Springfield area for increased inpatient services to meet the needs of those stricken with Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of dementia. With the baby boomer population aging, the need for these types of programs is expected to increase over the next several years, and Marathon Healthcare Center of Springfield plans to be ready to provide the necessary environment and programming in a safe, comfortable, home-like setting.
Quality recreational activities geared toward the memory impaired will be a strong focus of the dementia unit, as will be a calm, soothing environment. All staff providing care on the unit will receive a minimum of 12 hours of specialized training in caring for the resident with Alzheimer's Dementia. In addition, a Nationally Certified Program Director will be overseeing every aspect of the unit.
Alzheimer's is a brain disorder that destroys brain cells, causing impairment of memory, behavioral changes, loss of motor skills and eventually death. Although there are treatments to temporarily slow the progression of the disease, there is no cure. Marathon Healthcare Center of Springfield is committed to assisting the people in Western Massachusetts stricken with Alzheimer's Dementia in maintaining quality of life in a secure, structured setting.
