'Catch the Beat' summer reading program

Springfield City Library is excited to announce the 2007 summer reading program, "Catch the Beat @ Your Library." The ever-popular summer reading program kicks off June 18 and runs through August 4. The program promotes literacy all summer long, while giving kids a chance to earn prizes and participate in fun activities during the six-week program.

"We know that kids who read for the joy of it are the best readers. So the Library's summer reading club encourages children and teens to read their choice of books all summer long," said Jean Canosa-Albano, manger of youth and outreach services for the Library. "We motivate them to keep reading by offering fun, weekly activities at the Library, an online reporting Web page, and great prizes and parties to celebrate their reading progress."

This year's musical theme is reflected in a number of the activities the Library is hosting. Kids can participate in a wide variety of programming, including parties, scavenger hunts, dance tournaments, cooking demonstrations and more. Every week, each branch will host a special program just for members of the summer reading program.

As part of "Catch the Beat @ Your Library," the Library has created three separate clubs in order to meet the needs of specific age groups. There is a "Read-to-Me Club," for young children who read along with the help of a parent or caregiver, there is a "Kids Club," for kids who are reading on their own, and there is a "Teen Club," for kids aged 12-18. Each club offers specific programs and activities tailored to the age group of the participants. Individuals interested in joining Catch the Beat @ Your Library can sign-up online at www.SpringfieldLibrary.org or by visiting any Springfield City Library location.

"Catch the Beat @ Your Library" is sponsored by the Friends of the Springfield Library, Inc., the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, and the Massachusetts Regional Library System.
