Chinese New Year celebration and acupuncture class for kids offered in Amherst

AMHERST A Chinese New Year's Celebration and Open House for kids and those that love them will take place Feb. 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Acupuncture Works, 479 West St. #4 (Route 116) in Amherst.

Linda Robinson-Hidas, LicAc will host an open house with an opportunity to learn more about acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

There will be interactive learning stations to experience the important points about Chinese medical philosophy, history of medicine, treatment strategies, calligraphy and mathematics.

There will be hands-on exhibits about the philosophical concepts of Yin and Yang and the five phases or elements. These form the concepts on which acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine are based.

Children will be able to have and give "pretend" acupuncture treatments with stickers, as if they were being treated for coughs, colds, flu and sore throats.

A timeline of medicine will be on display to show how ancient some of the therapies of Chinese medicine are.

A station to practice writing Chinese characters will be out, with the opportunity to take home some work sheets.

Tangrams, a Chinese puzzle commonly used in geometry classes, will be available to match wits with.

Visitors will be invited to look, touch, smell and even taste some of the many substances in the herbal pharmacy which contains several hundred items such as dried berries, wood shavings, tree barks, roots, minerals, shells, seaweeds and fungi.
