Community Music School offers summer programs for all

SPRINGFIELD — The Community Music School of Springfield (CMSS) is offering an expanded array of special programs and study this summer beginning July 5 and continuing through Aug. 26.
Individual lessons may be taken throughout; other program offerings are for one and two-week sessions.
The Prelude Preschool of the Arts is presenting five themed sessions for children ages 2 years 9 months to 7 years old. Session I (July 5 to 15) is entitled, “Pirates & Princesses/Puppetry & Magic/ Dragons & Mythical Creatures”; Session II (July 18 to 29) “Under the Sea/ In the Rainforest/ Photography Safari/ World Drumming”; Session III (Aug. 1 to 5) “Future Maestros: Create-A-Musical”; Session IV (Aug. 8 to 12) Future Maestros: Create A Hit CD”; and Session V (Aug. 15 to 26) Rocket Ship Run/ Dinosaur Dig/ What’s Cooking?” Instructors will be Aric Beiganek, Erin Ewick, and Brettany Young. An extended day option is also available for parents who need it.
Individual instruction in 30-, 45- or 60-minute lessons will be available on piano, strings, winds, brass, percussion, and voice, including vocal coaching for public speaking.
Introduction to Guitar Group for ages 8 to adult will be offered in two sessions, July 7 to 28, and Aug. 4 to 25, taught by Bruce Johnson. He will also coach a Folk Music Group from July 7 to Aug. 25 for ages 16 to adult.
Students will learn five to eight familiar folk tunes. Singers, guitarists and other instrumentalists should plan to attend.
Violinist Carol Hutter will teach two sessions of an Improvisation Ensemble for Adults; Revitalizing Your Inner Musician first from July 5 through 26 and then from Aug. 2 to 23. The sessions are based on David Darling’s and Bonnie Insull’s “Music for People and Return to Child”.
“Hip Hop: Singing, Drumming and Rapping” will be an intensive group workshop held each day July 11 through 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students entering grades four, five and six will learn the rhythms and rhymes used to create original Hip Hop, as well as the fascinating history and development of Hip Hop as a musical genre.
The course will be taught by Jason Arnold, James “Scorpio” Andrews and Marcus Pitts.
