EEA Award deadline quickly approaching

BOSTON — This spring, Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Richard Sullivan Jr. will honor teachers and students in Massachusetts who are involved in school-based programs that promote environment and energy education.

The application deadline for the 17th annual Secretary's Awards for Excellence in Energy and Environmental Education is March 28.

"For students across the Commonwealth, this program provides an opportunity to explore local, national and global environmental and energy challenges facing residents and businesses, our cities and towns, our state and our country," Sullivan said. "I look forward to hearing what these young minds come up with to meet these challenges."

All Massachusetts schools (K-12) that offer energy and environmental education programs are eligible to apply for the Secretary's Award. In 2010, 52 programs at 43 schools and nine non-profit organizations across the state were recognized for their work on issues including recycling, energy conservation, ocean science, wildlife conservation and alternative fuels.

The Secretary's Advisory Group on Energy and Environmental Education will review applications through mid-April. Qualified entrants are invited to attend a formal award ceremony with Sullivan at the State House later in the spring.
