Events being held throughout Italian Heritage Month

October is Italian Heritage Month. The Italian Cultural Center of Western Massachusetts, presents the following activities that will occur throughout the month:

The opening activity will be a flag raising at Springfield City Hall on Oct. 9 on the City Hall steps at 10 a.m. with Mayor Charles Ryan reading a proclamation along with other distinguished guests. The students of Our Lady of Mont Carmel School in Springfield will be singing patriotic songs. After the ceremony, the public will be invited to the Mahogany Room for refreshments.

Columbus Day/Serviam Award Dinner Dance will occur on Oct. 12 at the Springfield Elks on Tiffany Street, Springfield at 6 p.m. Cost is $35 per person. Honorees for this year's Serviam Awards are Domenic Sarno and Al and Judy Dasso. For further information call 732-6569.

On Oct. 7 at 10:30 a.m. a memorial ceremony in honor of veterans of Italian descent will be held beginning with Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Williams Street in Springfield. Following Mass there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Columbus Statue Italian Veterans Memorial located on Main Street and Locust Street. Refreshments will follow at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
