Free MCAS prep offered this summer at STCC

SPRINGFIELD -- Current and former high school students who did not past the MCAS tests in math, English language arts, or biology may take an MCAS preparatory class this summer, free, at Springfield Technical Community College (STCC). The program is made possible by a $14,000 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Sue Soffen, director of Returning Adult Services at STCC, explained the classes are open to individuals from the classes of 2003 through 2011 who need academic remediation to pass the MCAS, obtain a high school diploma and transition to post-secondary education.

The Transition to College program is scheduled to begin on July 13 and end on Aug. 18. Classes will meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the Adult Education Center, building 27, on the STCC campus.

Independent study and tutorial support will also be available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during those dates.

All classes and curriculum materials are free for students enrolled in this program.

Soffen said the main focus of the program is to help students transition to college.

To enroll, individuals should apply in person at the Adult Education Center, building 27 at STCC, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information call the center at 755-4300. Seats are limited.
