Gray House seeks donations of clothing for men, women, babies and children

SPRINGFIELD As the leaves begin to change, so have the needs at The Gray House. The Gray House is now seeking donations of all clothing, which will be distributed to their neighbors in need.

The Gray House is a non-profit located in and serving the North End of Springfield, where the poverty rate exceeds 40 percent. The Gray House operates a Thrift Shop, where over 13,000 people received assistance last year.

"The shop always amazes me because everything in it is donated from community members," says Dena Calvanese, Executive Director. "People want to help others and donating clothing and household items is an easy way to make a difference."

Since all items are donated to The Gray House, people needing assistance are not charged a fee, though some offer a financial contribution or donate clothes that their children have outgrown.

The Gray House accepts clothing in all sizes for men, women and children. Right now, there is a great need for clothes for babies and children. As some schools have transitioned to uniforms, khaki and navy pants and long sleeve polo shirts (no logos) are especially needed. Hygiene items like shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste and diapers are also needed.

The Gray House asks that items be in good condition, with no stains or holes. "Providing people a sense of dignity, is us as important as providing them a shirt," explains Calvanese. "We don't want people feeling ashamed to wear something that comes from our shop."

So as you do your fall cleaning and find items you no longer want or need, consider bringing them to The Gray House for someone else to use.
