Hinchey named chief academic officer

SPRINGFIELD — Dr. Kevin T. Hinchey, FACP, who began his career at Baystate Medical Center as a resident in training and quickly established himself as an innovator in the field of academic medicine, has been named senior vice president and chief academic officer of Baystate Health.

His appointment comes after a nationwide search and after serving for the past year as interim chief academic officer at Baystate.

In his new position, Hinchey will provide strategic oversight for the education of medical students, residents and fellows at Baystate Medical Center, as well as coordinate the hospital's academic affiliation as the western campus of Tufts University School of Medicine. He will also oversee all research at the health system.

"Dr. Hinchey's selection after a national search is a testimony to his deep passion for medicine and vision for the future of graduate medical education, combined with his longtime dedication to Baystate Health and the many communities we serve. During his tenure at Baystate, he has been a strong leader of our many departments in the Academic Affairs Division, including the directors of our 10 residency and 16 fellowship programs, as well as in a variety of other areas such as our medical library and simulation lab," Dr. Mark A. Keroack, MPH, chief physician executive of Baystate Health, said.

"Dr. Hinchey was an early proponent of a strategic approach to research at Baystate, overseeing its role in advancing our mission of improving the health of our community, and he has advocated strongly for linking our teaching and research programs. He has worked to strengthen Baystate's community ties through collaborative programs with local colleges for the education of advanced practitioners, and is one of the founding board members of the Baystate Academy Charter School in Springfield," he added.

A graduate of Williams College and Tufts University School of Medicine, Hinchey served as chief resident in Internal Medicine at Baystate Medical Center from 1991-1992. For over a decade, he has led the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Baystate Medical Center to national prominence, showcasing innovative programs in the development of resident competencies, the advanced use of simulation and the integration of quality improvement into medical training.

"The outstanding work of Dr. Hinchey and his team has been highlighted at several national meetings and has led to the recognition of the Internal Medicine Residency as a site for educational innovation," Keroack said.
