Local students participate in Math Olympiad

SPRINGFIELD Students from Academy Hill School were among the nearly 150,000 students worldwide to participate this year in the Math Olympiad program. They participated in a series of five monthly contests of five problems each, from November to March, and weekly practice sessions under the supervision and coaching of teacher Carol Rosenthal of Westfield She taught the children to solve unusual and difficult problems and to think creatively.

The students responded well and all were recognized with certificates for their participation at the school's closing ceremonies on June 10 at the Veritas Auditorium, Elms College, Chicopee. Six students won national awards for excellence within the Elementary School Divisions:

The gold pin is awarded to those in at least the 98th percentile (top 2 %). Fifth graders David Balise of Feeding Hills and Jonathan Deaton of Longmeadow, with a score of 22 out of 25 points were in this group.

The silver pin is awarded to those in the 90th to 97th percentiles, including fifth graders Rane McDonough of West Springfield and Michael Danielczuk of Enfield, CT.

The team itself was named to the National High Achievement List for its score of 190 points. A team must be in the 80th to 89th percentile nationally to win this award.

Top scorers for each grade were fourth grader Carly Margolis of Wilbraham, fifth graders David Balise and Jonathan Deaton, and sixth grader Thomas Crandall of Somers, CT.

The Math Olympiad serves over 4000 teams and 100,000 students in the United States and about 1,800 teams and 35,000 students in 32 other countries.
