Longmeadow author’s book nominated for award

LONGMEADOW — “A Dog to Remember,” a book to give to a friend or relative to acknowledge the loss of their dog, is nominated by the Dog Writers Association of America for an award in the Human/Animal Bond category.

The 54-page illustrated book by June Greig of Longmeadow, is also in the running for the association’s Maxwell medallion for excellence. The medallion is named for the late Maxwell Riddle, a founding member, who was the Cleveland Press pet columnist from 1938 to 1969, and a columnist for Dog World magazine for more than 50 years.

Nominees in the association’s annual contest were chosen in December, and awards will be presented at the association’s annual banquet on Feb. 12 in New York City.

“A Dog to Remember” reflects on life with a dog and how memories of good times together will last forever. It is designed as a remembrance to help lift the spirits of the recipient, and to acknowledge the depth of their loss, according to the author.

It includes a page to personalize the book by writing the name of the dog being recognized. Published in 2011 by Evergreen Bay Publishing, the book is illustrated by Gina Duffy of Easthampton.

The book was featured earlier this year on the “Small Press Bookwatch” of Midwest Book Review.

“A charming book of illustrated short passages for easy reading,” the review stated in its July 2011 issue. “‘A Dog to Remember’ is a fine study, very much recommended.”

Midwest Book Review receives more than 1,500 plus titles per month, and about one-third are selected for review, according to Editor-in-Chief James A. Cox.
