Massachusetts offers hotline for adult literacy information

BOSTON World Education would like to acquaint you with the Massachusetts Adult Literacy Hotline, a free statewide service funded by the Massachusetts Department of Education, which provides information and referrals to adult learners and volunteer tutors.

Students Massachusetts adults: Do you need a high school diploma or GED? Do you want to improve your reading, writing, or math? Do you want to learn English? The Massachusetts Adult Literacy Hotline provides information about adult education programs in your area. Call 1-800-447-8844 any day, 6 a.m. to midnight.

Volunteers Are you looking for a rewarding volunteer experience? Are you interested in helping another adult pursue their educational goals? The Massachusetts Adult Literacy Hotline provides information and referral to potential volunteers. The local literacy program usually offers training.

Background information about the Massachusetts Adult Literacy Hotline:
  • The Massachusetts Adult Literacy Hotline provides information and referrals to adult students and volunteers regarding Adult Basic Education.

  • Adult Basic Education includes basic reading and writing, GED preparation, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), family literacy and citizenship classes.

  • We have information about close to 300 programs across the state.

  • Most programs are free of cost, but some charge tuition.

  • The type of instruction also varies by program; some are classroom-based and some provide one-on-one tutoring.

  • For the purposes of the Hotline, adults are considered to be 16 years of age and older and not enrolled in a K-12 school.

  • When a caller contacts the Hotline, we give them names and phone numbers of programs in their local area.
